about

I remember thinking this felt like a country song at first. I don’t know if I agree with the lyrics anymore, the idea of waiting around for someone to come back to you seems like a bad idea now. But at the time, I felt it and thought it seemed romantic and not pathetic. The title is meant to be a bit of a rebuke on the classic male-written love song idea of “you belong to me and should do what I want you to do so I can be happy.” The end of the track was an intentional homage to the end of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

lyrics

If it takes a whole year,
how much time can I need?
You and your fears don't choke the love that grows in me.
It still breathes.

Your light burning,
some nights, I still see.
My eyes believe
when it shines on me.

Old, but not dead,
my dreams, they won't wake up.
You may run ahead,
but come back home if it's not enough.
I'll be waiting up.

I breathe when I sleep.
Cold sweat, and beating.
What we hoped would be,
it's everything.

And while you sleep
I think away more than I keep.
I hope you dream
but rest with ease.
And when you wake, if you think of me,
say my name.
